Last week “Traces Of The Soul” Director Martin Cooper and I (Producer/DOP/Assitant Editor/Motion Graphics) headed off to Asolo, Italy for the 36th Asolo Art Film Festival and the world premiere of Martin Cooper’s “Traces Of The Soul” there.
We were very happy to be joined by my dear friends Eric Jason Hall and Fumiko Mallory (who worked on parts of Traces Of The Soul as cameraman and interviewer) for the first screening at the festival.
Asolo is a beautiful little town about an hour from Venice known as “The city of a hundred horizons”.
It is a lovely place, little windy streets opening out into a central square with a beautiful cathedral and al fresco bars and restaurants.
The majority of the screenings at the festival were held at Convento di SS Pietro e Paolo a short walk up from the main square.
The staff at the festival were extremely friendly and helpful as was everyone we met there.
Particular thanks must go to Frederica & Chiara.
It was also a great pleasure to meet Kassim Yassin Saleh, Bruno Gripari and Adrian Maben.
Bruno Gripari is a calligrapher/artist based nearby Asolo who did a performance of his work in the courtyard of the Convent before our main screening on the Sunday. He was also kind enough to take Martin and I to his studio and show us some of his beautiful work.

The crew also managed 2 quick side trips to Bassano del Grappa (The home of delicious Grappa) and Venice which made the whole trip a wonderful first experience of Italy.

As always there were issues with Ryanair (delays much?), unscrupulous car rental agents (Avoid Goldcar and their dodgy insurance practices like the plague) and some scheduling and room choice decisions at the festival that could have been handled (much) better, but overall it was a very positive experience and I’m proud to have been there at the world premiere of a film I worked so hard on.
Here’s a few more pictures from the trip:-
