Uchujin, Falsalama and His Holiness the Dali Lama

Uchujin, Falsalama and His Hoiliness the Dali Lama ©Claire Pullinger

Nothing like a good name drop, especially if it’s someone revered by millions of people world wide as a living god.
I recently came across this picture thanks to my dearest friend Falsalama (see my portrait of him HERE).
The original photo was taken by Claire Pullinger and this must have been taken in 1999, when Falsalama and I were soundmen for His Holiness in Bodh Gaya, India for his teachings over the millenium.

More Narcisuss

2009.05.24

As with my earlier post, Every now and then I have free time on my hands and no one to shoot so I end up shooting myself.
Keep telling myself its for lighting practise, keeping my hand in, trying out new setups and equipment, this time a new boom arm and softbox.
There seems to be some deeper psychological process at work too, especially in the post production phase, editing out the increasing number of dark shadows and blown blood vessels on my face, a Dorian Gray like guilty pleasure when I end up with a picture I want to show the world.
So anyway, enough navel gazing, heres the picture.

New Portfolio Site

2009.03.13

My new Portfolio site is live.

The idea was to provide a minimal number of photographs within an uncluttered interface and larger photos to allow clients to get a quick overview of my work without being faced with the 200 plus images on my main site.
If that was the brief I’m reasonably confident that that is what I have achieved.

Feel free to leave me a comment or critique.

Narcissus?

2009.02.28

A cold Saturday in Tokyo, my day off and nothing constructive to do.
Really wanting to practice my lighting skills due to some upcoming assignments the only model available would have to do.

There seems to something inherently narcissistic about the self portrait, a stable of artists since the dawn of time. The challenge, to represent oneself truthfully, warts and all, or as is so often the case, to ‘big up your badself’.

Looking skinny like a model…..pt 2

2009.02.18

If you go down to the woods today you’re in for a big surprise.

Well, ok it’s hardly ‘the woods’, but lets say for instance you were walking down Meiji dori in Harajuku and you walked past the Uniqlo ‘UT’ store, you may if you glanced at the store window see someone you recognised.

If you did recognise that person, you would be as surprised as I was when a friend called my wife excitedly to say she had seen me gracing the store front in not just 1 but 2 large pictures as part of uniqlos ‘The 11 and the only’ top stylists T-shirt campaign.
As happy as I am to be gazing out at the freaks and wannabes strolling down Harajukus’ streets, the pictures sparked a disgruntled Uchujin to storm into my agency yesterday with all guns blazing.
You see I was told that the pictures from that shoot were going to be only gracing Uniqlos website and was payed accordingly (much less than you would expect).
Had I known that the pictures were destined for prime position on the store front I would never have agreed to the shoot at that money. Read more…

I’m now a Getty contributer

2009.02.12

Today I received an email from Getty Images via my Flickr account asking if I would like to include some selected images from my Flickr stream in the new Getty Flickr collection.

After some thought on the matter I have decided it would be crazy to say no, although I’m sure some of my photographer friends will come up with convincing arguments why not.
